Shotcrete Admixtures Building Construction
How Shotcrete Admixtures Are Vital to Effective Building Construction Projects
When planning construction projects, shotcrete is often included in the final building materials list. Shotcrete is ideal for various building construction projects, especially those involving surfaces that are difficult to access, overhead, curved, or vertical. However, because of shotcrete’s application method, some of its most vital properties can be lost during placement. Therefore, the right admixtures must be incorporated during the mixing process.
Shotcrete Use in Building Construction
Given its versatility, shotcrete can be used to create structural walls when the existing foundation is below grade or when the placement of concrete-formed walls is logistically challenging. Shotcrete is also an excellent choice for forming, patching, or repairing non-structural elements, such as facade sections, drainage structures, and retaining walls. However, using shotcrete effectively necessitates using admixtures that allow the material to retain its strength, durability, and workability, as well as meet specific job-site-related requirements.
Admixtures for Strength
Chemical admixtures should be added to shotcrete during the dry or wet mixing process to ensure the shotcrete retains its tensile, compressive, and flexural strength. Water-reducing admixtures reduce the water required to maintain a workable mix, which results in higher strength shotcrete due to the lower water-cement ratio. Superplasticizers reduce water at an even greater rate than standard water-reducing admixtures and are ideal for creating high-strength shotcrete. Accelerating admixtures speed up the rate at which shotcrete hardens, locking in early strength gains.
These aren’t the only options for the development of high-strength shotcrete. Mineral admixtures, such as silica fume, and fiber, such as carbon nanofibers, can be very effective depending on the required strength levels, mixing process, and other desired shotcrete properties.
Admixtures for Durability
Admixtures such as air-entrainers and water-reducers also enhance shotcrete durability while reducing its permeability. Shotcrete incorporating these chemical admixtures is less susceptible to shrinkage, cracking, spalling, delamination, and scaling. They also mitigate the risk of efflorescence, which can cause structural damage to building materials. Further, adding corrosion-inhibiting admixtures can help reduce the risk of rust and corrosion in rebar and other embedded metals, protecting concrete from deterioration.
Admixtures for Workability
Some admixtures are vital to ensuring that shotcrete retains its workability throughout the application process. The ability of shotcrete to flow smoothly through a pump without causing unnecessary wear and tear is crucial. Shotcrete must be able to be pumped the required distance and height without losing strength and durability, as well as remain fluid enough for necessary finishing and carving. Supplemental cementitious materials such as fly ash, slag, and silica fume, which can enhance compressive, flexural, and bonding strengths, can be helpful in this regard, as can water-reducing admixtures and superplasticizers.
Admixtures for Job Site Requirements
Determining which admixtures are appropriate relies on careful consideration of specific job site requirements. The proper shotcrete composition will depend on a careful evaluation of job-site soils, terrain, earth movement, and average climate. It’s also crucial to account for the height at which shotcrete will need to be applied, the weather during construction, and the distance from the concrete plant to the job site, which may necessitate adding or reducing certain admixtures. Further, project managers, engineers, and contractors must evaluate existing concrete if shotcrete is being used for patching or repair work to determine shotcrete requirements.
