History of Mortar Admixture

The use of admixtures can be traced back to the Roman era after the invention of concrete. However, in 1933, the first modern use of a chemical admixture in concrete was documented, thanks to an engineer named Bertrand H. Wait, who started experimenting with Portland cement blends. Subsequently, the first road built using blended cement contained 85% Portland cement and 15% Rosendale natural cement. Natural cement was a precursor of Portland cement that used minimally processed cement from the natural rock found in the earth’s crust. By 1937, blended cement became a standard highway construction practice in New York and other states.

At this time, it was inconclusive that these cement blends were more resistant to freeze-thaw cycles.
